TAAT Calls For Abolishment of Death Penalty: The Tunisian Association Against Torture (TAAT) called upon President Essebsi to abolish the death penalty and to establish May 8 as the national day against torture, in honor of activist Nabil Barakati who was tortured to death while in police custody on May 8, 1987. TAAT President Radhia Nasraoui criticized the judiciary for moving slowly on torture cases. President Essebsi stated in his meeting with representatives of the TAAT that “Tunisia should break with practices that violate the principles of the Constitution,” pledging “to spare no effort to intervene in this area under the provisions of the Constitution,” and emphasizing the importance of “completing the stage of building democracy.”
