On May 8, Tunisians celebrated the National Day against Torture, established last year by former President Moncef Marzouki. The date commemorates the death of activist Nabil Barakati on May 8, 1987, at the police station in the city of Gaafour. Barakati was arrested for disseminating leaflets denouncing then-President Habib Bourguiba’s repressive regime, and tortured to death.
